Context and Strict Challenges from the Fresh Coconut Water Processing Industry
Betrimex (Ben Tre Import-Export Joint Stock Company) is one of the leading enterprises in the production and export of coconut-based products in Vietnam. With high-quality product lines such as canned fresh coconut water and coconut milk exported to demanding markets like the US and Europe, food safety and hygiene standards are always a vital factor. To retain the refreshing natural flavor and preserve all natural micronutrients, the fresh coconut water raw materials harvested at collection stations must be immediately transported to the processing plant under sterile conditions and strict temperature control.
Transporting food-grade liquids, especially fresh coconut water, presents challenging engineering problems for fabrication engineers:
- Temperature sensitivity: Fresh coconut water is highly susceptible to fermentation and changes in color and taste if the temperature rises during transport under the hot weather of the Mekong Delta.
- Absolute sterile requirements: Surfaces in direct contact with the coconut water must have an extremely high level of smoothness to prevent bacterial adhesion, and the piping and discharge valve systems must be easy to clean using CIP (Clean-in-Place) processes.
- Road safety during transit: Large-capacity road tankers installed on trucks are subjected to continuous dynamic loads during transit. The tanker design must ensure optimal center-of-gravity distribution, anti-slosh, and spill-proof features to operate safely on rough roads.

Implementation Process of the COCONUT ROAD TANKER Project by Hoang Tam
To complete the project on schedule in April 2021, Hoang Tam's team of skilled engineers and workers executed a closed, standardized workflow from the conceptual stage to the actual handover.
1. Technical Consultation & Solution Design
Before starting fabrication, Hoang Tam's engineering team conducted a field survey of Betrimex's transport chassis trucks and calculated the required transport capacity. We applied an intensive Technical Consultation & Solution Design process to draft detailed 3D drawings of the Road Tanker.
The design was carefully calculated regarding volume and the number of compartments to minimize liquid sloshing when the vehicle accelerates or brakes suddenly. The internal anti-slosh baffle system was designed in a domed shape, ensuring both a sturdy structure and ease of cleaning. The thickness of the polyurethane (PU foam) insulation layer was also calculated using thermal simulation to guarantee that the temperature increase of the coconut water does not exceed 1 degree Celsius after an 8-hour journey.
2. Fabrication & Manufacturing at Hoang Tam's Workshop
After the design drawings were approved by Betrimex, the Fabrication & Manufacturing process was immediately deployed at Hoang Tam's workshop equipped with modern machinery. High-quality SUS 316L stainless steel sheets were selected for the inner shell in direct contact with the food product, and SUS 304 for the outer protective cladding.
The welding process was executed by internationally certified pressure vessel welders using Argon-shielded TIG welding technology, ensuring excellent penetration and zero porosity in the welds. The key factor driving the quality of the Coconut Road Tanker was the internal surface treatment. All internal welds were ground flat and polished to achieve a surface roughness of Ra < 0.4 µm, completely eliminating the risk of bacterial buildup in small crevices.
3. On-site Installation & Execution
The On-site Installation & Execution phase required seamless coordination between the mechanical workshop and the site technical team. After complete fabrication at the workshop, the tanker was transported to the installation site to be mounted onto the chassis of the specialized truck.
Hoang Tam's engineers designed an auxiliary sub-frame system made of high-strength steel clad in stainless steel, flexibly yet securely connected to the truck chassis using rubber vibration dampers. This design dampens torsional forces from the road surface acting on the tank body, extending the lifespan of both the tank and the transport vehicle. Auxiliary systems such as food-grade pumps, flow meters, sterile one-way breather valves, and CIP pipelines were also integrated synchronously and professionally insulated with high aesthetic quality.
